The Story Beneath the Surface

The LaDonna Legacy

In 2002 my mother’s good friend, Carole Ann Waid, invited her to teach swim lessons together. It all started in Carole Ann’s backyard, where her pool became the gathering place for a handful of kids excited to learn how to swim. What began as a simple idea, teaching kids how to be safe in the water, quickly grew into something much bigger.

That pool was often filled with the sound of excited splashes, giggles, and the occasional nervous hesitation of a child dipping their toes into the water for the first time. LaDonna’s warmth and patience brought out the best in every swimmer, whether they were learning to float or taking their first strokes. Many would even say she was magic. Soon, word spread, and what was once a quiet backyard lesson turned into a bustling hub of families eager to sign their kids up.

After several years, there were simply too many swimmers for one backyard to handle. That’s when my family started seriously talking about putting a pool in our own backyard. It wasn’t long before every inch of our backyard was filled with children and families, all with one common goal: to be confident and safe in the water. The lessons continued every summer, and each year, more and more children learned from Mrs. LaDonna.

I remember the anticipation every year on March 1st, staying up late with my mom as she sat at the computer, watching the first registration emails roll in at midnight (so I know it’s crazy we still do this, but it’s a sweet memory and a tradition!) The joy, the stories, the laughter; Mrs. LaDonna wasn’t just a swim teacher, she created a community, a family, and a part of our home. It was a place where children overcame their fears, learned life-saving skills, and made memories that would last a lifetime. Even the tears—tears of frustration, fear, and sometimes joy—were part of the process, a testament to the bravery and growth of every swimmer who came through.

When my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2016, the backyard grew quiet. For the first time in as long as I could remember, there were no excited voices, no splashing water, no lessons being taught. The absence of those swimmers made our backyard seem so lonely in the summers. Yet, I knew, as I’m sure my mom did too, that those kids had given her something immeasurable. They had brought her so much joy.

Teaching those children, watching them overcome their fear and become confident in the water, was not just a job for my mom—it was her passion, her mission. It wasn’t just about swimming; it was about giving them a skill that could save their lives. Even after my mom went to be with Jesus in 2017, the impact she had on so many families was never lost. It will always be a part of who we are, which is why Bridget, and I created LaDonna’s Pool of Joy, to continue the legacy, and put joy back in this pool that has transformed so many swimmers.

Mrs. Shelby

Hello! I am so thrilled you are interested in Pool of Joy. My name is Shelby Hladky and it brings me so much J O Y to instill confidence and safety into each one of our swimmers. I grew up watching swim lessons in my backyard. My mom taught every summer all summer as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to people brag about how talented Ms. LaDonna was, and how unique she was in the water. Her passion ran deep and those kids connected with her. After assisting her summer after summer my passion for water safety quickly grew. I looked forward to helping my mom in the water each year.  When we lost her in 2017 to pancreatic cancer the backyard felt so empty in the summers. No laughter (& even tears) filled the pool, and that’s when my cousin and I decided it was our job to carry on her legacy and love for the water. Then when my husband and I bought my childhood home, I knew that pool was created to teach little ones how to safely enjoy the water.  Apart from assisting my mother in the water for years, I was on the swim team for over 10 years, as a member and an assistant coach, learning not only water safety but proper stroke techniques. After high school I was a Kilgore College Rangerette, then completed my education at Texas A&M University. I am now married to my high school sweetheart and we have two children, Leighton and Tate. I began teaching in 2015 at Marcus High School as the assistant director of the Marcus Marquettes.  I am CPR certified and Water Safety Certified through the Red Cross.  These summers have brought Mrs. Bridget and I more joy than we could have ever imagined. We know my mom is proud and smiling down on all of her little swimmers. Thank you for trusting us with your littles; it means the world to us and we are thrilled to be going into another impactful summer!

Mrs. Bridget

Welcome to Pool of Joy! My name is Bridget Cupper, and I am thrilled that you are here. I grew up in Spring, TX and moved to DFW when I went to college at Dallas Baptist University. I am currently a 3rd grade teacher at McAuliffe Elementary and have been teaching elementary school since 2017.  It’s my greatest passion in life to teach and pour into young kids.  While growing up, I was constantly in the water from going to the lake every year to swim team. I swam on a team from age 5-18, and I served as captain of my high school swim team. After I graduated, I taught swim lessons and even found a position as a summer league swim coach. That being said, I was overjoyed to help my cousin start Pool of Joy back up again in 2020. It combines all of my greatest passions in life- teaching, kids, and the water!  My greatest goal is to give each of my swimmers the confidence to be independent and safe in the water. Watching my aunt teach in this very backyard summer after summer, my hope is that we are making her proud by picking up where she left off and teaching our same passion in the space she created. I miss my Aunt LaDonna, but the Pool of Joy is another way I can honor her legacy.

Ms. Campbell

Hi y’all, my name is Campbell Clark and I am so excited to be joining the POJ team this year! The water has always held a special place in my heart. Growing up, many of my favorite childhood memories include being in or around the pool with the people that I love. It has always been a place I have felt comfortable and relaxed, especially in the heat of the summer ;) I grew up in Flower Mound and swam competitively on the Wellington Sharks for 7 years, beginning at 4 years old (it’s never too early to start!). I am also currently CPR certified and Water Safety Certified through the Red Cross.  I attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 2022 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. In 2023, I graduated from Texas A&M University (can you tell we’re a family of Aggies?) with my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. After graduating, I felt called to broaden my horizons, challenge myself, and experience something uncomfortable and new. For the past 10 months, I have been teaching first grade at an elementary school in Madrid, Spain and traveling all around Europe! While this has been the experience of a lifetime, I am so excited to jump back into life at home, starting with an incredible summer in the Pool of Joy!  In 2020, my mom married Shelby’s dad and I could not be more amazed at how intricate and gracious God’s plan was for our family. Shelby, Bridget, McKinley, and I have shared countless memories on the lake and by the pool, our favorite place to talk and laugh for hours. Though the stories of both of our families began with grief, they’ve since been woven together through laughter and J O Y! I am overwhelmed and honored to step into the POJ legacy that LaDonna left.  Education is my passion and I believe that there is so much value in cultivating an environment where students feel safe and supported taking risks and challenging themselves. This is just as true in the pool as it is in a classroom! For many, swimming can feel overwhelming and it is important that both veteran and first-time swimmers feel safe and encouraged while in the pool. I am honored to be a part of this journey and appreciate you trusting me with your kiddos!
